The Chawl Building is one of the historical buildings in Zanzibar, prominently referred to as “Jumba la Treni” in Swahili language. Historically, the building was built in 1880 by Sultan Baraghash bin Said who was the third Sultan to rule Zanzibar.

Until 1900’s, 160 families lived in the building occupied the first and the second floor.  The Building was put under the control of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, after Zanzibar Revolution in 1964, and in few years later, it was handed over to Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) for restoration and renovation. ZSSF took measures in restoration, renovation and face lifting of the building into a modern commercial building which has ten residential apartments units, and other tenements which are being used for commercial purposes.

The Old slave market which serves the population of stone town dwellers with home groceries including fish and cow meat, religious institutions such as The Anglican Cathedral, Saint Joseph’s Cathedral (Roman Catholic), The Malindi Mosque and so much more all are found around the vicinity of the building. 24 Hours tax transport is available; ATMs, Pharmacy, Restaurant, and Gym facilities are also found within the compound.

The apartments feature a living room with a cement sand screed floor, modern kitchen with wood cabinets, kitchen sinks together with the countertops, fair finished painted backsplash walls, modern toilets and bathrooms with luxury shower system.  Besides, halls or mini corridors and one of the ten apartment’s unit has a balcony. Each apartment unit has a modern safety system i.e. smoke detectors, security cameras, fire alarm system, fire horse reel system, fire extinguishers etc. All bathrooms are equipped with modern shower head (overhead and sprayer), heater for hot water. These modern apartments are of different sizes, two apartments with two bedroom and eight of them with one bedroom.
